Micro-needling with activated PRP

Medical microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a safe, widely used treatment for overall skin improvement.  Tiny needles are used in a pen-like, oscillating device that puts thousands of tiny holes in the surface of the skin.  These controlled micro-injuries stimulate a healing response.  Our bodies respond by producing collagen and elastin and sometimes shedding the outer layer while forming a new one underneath.

We often pair this treatment with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).  PRP is the part of our blood that has all the growth factors, platelets, cytokines, and chemokines – all important parts of our healing and collagen stimulation response.  We apply PRP to the surface of the skin before, during, and after the microneedling treatment.  When we pair the two, we can double our results after each treatment!  Learn more about PRP on our PRP injection page.

The treatment itself begins with up to 1 hour of an anesthetic cream.  We will then clean the skin and apply a thin layer of PRP before starting the treatment.  The microneedling portion is done in sections.  We will complete the face and neck in about 30-45 minutes.  The skin will be red and mildly bloody when the treatment is finished.  We ask that you avoid applying products or washing them for at least 1 hour.  Sun protection is key, so a hat is recommended!

Tip 1:  The more hydrated you are for your appointment, the easier it will be for us to get an adequate amount of blood and PRP!

Tip 2:  Bring a hat to your treatment as we cannot apply SPF immediately after treatment!

Tip 3:  This treatment is the gold standard for acne scarring!

The results from this treatment develop slowly as collagen production occurs.  This process can take as long as 12 weeks.  After the first week of healing, you will notice a post-treatment glow.  Brighter, tighter, smoother skin is expected after each treatment.  A series of treatments is often necessary for optimal results.  The treatments in a series are spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.

Side Effects & Recovery

The severity of the downtime and side effects depend on the intensity of the treatment.  A gentle treatment may cause redness and mild swelling for 1 to 2 days.  A more aggressive treatment may have more severe redness, tiny scabs, and swelling for 5 to 7 days.  Bruises are possible but very uncommon.  The more aggressive the treatment, the greater risk for side effects, but the more profound the results.  Be sure to schedule your treatment so you can have a bit of downtime!
